The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
by Mark Twain

Published: 1884 (Audiobook: 2010)

Genre(s): Classics, Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction

TLDR:

Who doesn’t know the gist of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn? Honestly, I wanted to give this a listen to refresh myself before I pick up “James” by Percival Everett, so this is basically just homework. Though Elijah Wood does do a great job with the narration.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My Review

I mean … it’s Huck Finn! It’s one of the Great American Novels for a reason. This is not going to be an overly critical or thoughtful review. It is what it is.

Huckleberry Finn gets into a long series of adventures and misadventures in this classic novel by Mark Twain. I wanted to go back and refresh myself on the original text before picking up James by Percival Everett, which tells the story of Huck Finn from Jim’s point of view.

I will say, if I had tried to pick up a print copy of this classic, I likely would have had a very different experience that I did listening to Elijah Wood narrate it at 2x speed. I also did not have my English Literature major hat on while listening.

If I were to time travel back to high school or college, I’m sure I could write essay after essay on this book (and many, many students have done so). But today, the audiobook served its purpose and I’m grateful for it.

Heyo! I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Lydia and welcome to my ramblings about my love of all things books and reading. I’m a millennial book blogger living in Chicago but originally from the Great State of Maine. In addition to reading (duh) I also love to cook, rock out at karaoke or take in a good musical or opera.

Rating System:

5 stars: Excellent, loved it, couldn’t put it down. Will be recommending it to all my friends and also strangers who didn’t even ask and may not have even said hello. This is my new personality now.

4 stars: Great. I loved it. I had an excellent time reading it. There’s just something that’s keeping it from absolute perfection.

3 stars: It was a good read, but it wasn’t great. I may still recommend, but only for certain people if I already know you like similar things or only with a caveat or two.

2 stars: I mean, it was a book and I finished it, I guess? Somebody must have liked it because it got published?

1 star: I have never in my life given a book a one star review. If it’s this bad, I’ll just DNF.
